Choriocapillaris flow deficit associated with intraretinal hyperreflective foci in intermediate age-related macular degeneration

Tiosano L, Byon I, Alagorie AR, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to assess the choriocapillaris (CC) flow deficit (FD) beneath drusen correlated with overlying intraretinal hyperreflective foci (HRF). Using the Cirrus HD-OCT with AngioPlex software, patients with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD) who had structural spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and OCT angiography have been retrospectively assessed. Fifty-three eyes with intermediate AMD were involved, 25 eyes with HRF, and 28 eyes with no HRF. A strong positive correlation was found between the quantity of HRF and the extent of the CC FD. Choriocapillaris flow deficits tend to be more severe with HRF in the eyes, and particularly directly below HRF. As HRF is thought to reflect a higher risk or more advanced intermediate AMD feature, these findings illustrate the relationship between CC FD severity and overall AMD severity.
