Chemoprophylaxis for the hip fracture patient: A comparison of warfarin and low-molecular-weight heparin
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Apr 26, 2019
Trivedi NN, et al. - In candidates who underwent operative fixation of hip fractures, the rates of deep venous thrombosis (DVT), rates of pulmonary embolus (PE), and complication profiles of warfarin and low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) were quantified by researchers, evaluating insurance-based database of more than 22 million patient records. They found higher rates of DVT and PE in individuals prescribed warfarin vs those prescribed LMWH. More chances of development of a postoperative hematoma and to be readmitted within 30 and 90 days were recorded in persons on warfarin as compared to subjects on LMWH. Both groups were observed with similar rates of total complications.
