Characteristics of ocular findings of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Hubei province, China
JAMA Ophthalmology May 18, 2020
Wu P, Duan F, Luo C, et al. - Researchers conducted this case series to examine ocular manifestations and viral prevalence in the conjunctiva of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Patients diagnosed with COVID-19 from February 9 to 15, 2020 were retrospectively reviewed for ocular manifestations at a hospital center in Hubei province, China. Among the 38 patients with clinically reported COVID-19, 12 patients had ocular manifestations like epiphora, conjunctival congestion, or chemosis, and these occurred more frequently in patients with more severe systemic manifestations. For severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in 28 nasopharyngeal swabs and 2 conjunctival swabs, reverse transcriptase – polymerase chain reaction outcomes were positive, and more important differences in blood test values occurred in patients with ocular abnormalities. Such data will help ophthalmologists and others grasp COVID-19's ocular manifestations, thus improving the diagnosis and prevention of disease transmission.
