Characteristics of infant deaths during sleep while under nonparental supervision

The Journal of Pediatrics Apr 11, 2018

Elena Lagon, et al. - Researchers sought to compare the risk factors for infant sleep-related deaths under the supervision of parents and nonparents in the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention Child Death Review Case Reporting System. In infants who died of sleep-related causes under nonparental supervision, they noted higher odds of being placed nonsupine. A higher likeliness to use unsafe sleep environments, such as locations other than a crib or bassinet and bed sharing were seen in relatives and friends among nonparental supervisors. Parents ought to be educated by the pediatricians that all caregivers must always follow safe sleep practices.
