Characteristics and safety of tattoos in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus
Lupus Aug 11, 2019
Sabio JM, et al. - Individuals (n = 147) were asked whether they had tattoos or not by the experts in order to ascertain the safety of tattoos in individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In all, ≥ 1 tattoo was observed in 28 individuals. The median (interquartile range) SLEDAI and Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American Collage of Rheumatology Damage Index (SDI) were 2 (0–2) and 0 (0–1), respectively, at the time of getting a tattoo. The features of the tattoos were comparable to those of controls. Acute complications were not obtained in any individual. Four patients had five mild-to-moderate flare-ups following a median follow-up of 17 (12–20) months (3 [2–4] visits/year). Between the tattoo and the flare-up, the median time was 9 months. No progress in SDI was noted. The SLE-related features of patients with and without tattoos were comparable. Hence, in SLE patients with inactive or low active disease, tattoos appeared to be safe.
