Characteristics and progression of childhood‐onset and adult‐onset eosinophilic esophagitis
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Aug 13, 2021
Wong S, Ellison S, Ali SH, et al. - Seemingly, patients with childhood-onset eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) experience disease progression from childhood to adulthood, however, they exhibit more inflammatory-type symptoms post transition relative to patients with adult-onset EoE.
Total 87 adults and 67 children with EoE were evaluated via a questionnaire.
Reflux symptoms and asthma were more commonly present in childhood-onset EoE and adult-onset EoE, respectively.
In childhood-onset EoE, median duration of symptoms before diagnosis was >1-4 years (44%); it was ≥10 years in adult-onset disease (34%).
Initial presentation with food impaction was significantly more common in adult-onset EoE but weight loss was more common in childhood-onset EoE.
Patients with childhood-onset EoE more commonly had regurgitation, abdominal pain, and bloating, at the time of questionnaire.
