Changes in urinary risk profile after short-term low sodium and low calcium diet in recurrent Swiss kidney stone formers

BMC Nephrology Dec 19, 2017

Seeger H, et al. - This retrospective analysis was performed to assess the changes in urinary risk profile subsequent to short-term low-sodium in combination with a low-calcium diet in Swiss recurrent kidney stone formers (rKSF). A significant reduction of urinary calcium excretion, but no change in urine volume was noted in recurrent calcium oxalate stone formers after intake of a diet low in sodium and calcium. Furthermore, calcium restriction does not necessarily result in increased urinary oxalate excretion in this population. However, keeping in mind the previous reports, a normal dietary calcium intake was recommended to avoid a potential increase in urinary oxalate excretion and unfavorable effects on bone metabolism in hypercalciuric KSFs.
