Changes in retinal microcirculation precede the clinical onset of diabetic retinopathy in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus
American Journal of Ophthalmology Apr 26, 2019
Inanc M, et al. - Authors evaluated 60 subjects with diabetes mellitus (DM) without clinically detectable diabetic retinopathy (DR) and who met 57 age-matched controls and analyzed the impact of abnormal glucose metabolism in DM on retinal microcirculation of children with well-controlled type 1 DM vs healthy kids. Statistically significant differences were reported between the groups for vessel densities of deep superior hemi-parafovea, and deep temporal parafovea as well as deep superior parafoveal zones. They found that diabetic eyes without clinically detectable DR presented changes in foveal density, acircularity index of FAZ, perimeter, and vessel density of parafoveal capillaries in deep capillary plexus introducing the enlargement of the foveal avascular zone.
