American Journal of Ophthalmology Dec 06, 2019
Patel SN, Storey PP, Pancholy M, et al. - In this retrospective case series, researchers ascertained if vitreous culture results influence the clinical management of patients with acute endophthalmitis after intravitreal anti–vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injection. Between January 1, 2016, and May 31, 2018, individuals who developed endophthalmitis after intravitreal injection of aflibercept, bevacizumab, or ranibizumab were included. Of 204,986 intravitreal anti-VEGF injections performed, 60 cases of endophthalmitis have been identified, 18 of which have been culture-positive. Based on positive-culture results, no additional interventions were started. Following endophthalmitis from intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF agents, data from the vitreous culture that help predict visual outcomes but seem to have restricted impact on clinical management.
