Changes in consumer purchases in stores participating in an obesity prevention initiative
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Apr 25, 2018
Woodward-Lopez G, et al. - Researchers determined the impact of participation in an obesity prevention initiative on store environments and consumer purchases. Study participants included shoppers at nine small stores in three diverse, low-income communities in Northern California. In order to achieve a measurable impact on purchases, the requirement for substantive improvements in fruit and vegetable availability and promotion was realized. A less consistent intensive effort was required for attenuating purchases of unhealthy foods, like sweets and chips. Overall, at a large enough proportion of stores where residents shop, it may be challenging to achieve the consistent and targeted implementation of changes and ongoing promotional efforts.
