Changes in choroidal structure following intravitreal aflibercept therapy for retinal vein occlusion
British Journal of Ophthalmology Jul 21, 2020
Mitamura Y, Enkhmaa T, Sano H, et al. - In this retrospective, observational case series, researchers assessed changes in the choroidal structure after intravitreal aflibercept (IVA) injections for retinal vein occlusion (RVO) using binarization of enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomographic (EDI-OCT) images and analyzed correlations with clinical outcome in order to examine the choroidal change following RVO in detail. Before and 1, 3, and 6 months after IVA injections, 40 treatment-naïve patients were examined by EDI-OCT. Findings suggested that RVO induces substantial oedema of the choroidal stromal area that can be detected by binarization of EDI-OCT images. This stromal oedema is likely to result from high levels of endothelial growth factor in the intraocular vascular. Changes in choroidal structure may be used to evaluate the severity and prognosis of RVO.
