Changes in breast and colorectal cancer screening after Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act
American Journal of Preventive Medicine May 28, 2019
Fedewa SA, et al. - Researchers used Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data and focused on the links between Medicaid expansion timing and colorectal cancer (CRC) and breast cancer (BC) screening. Among low-income respondents aged 50–64 years, they calculated CRC (n=95,400) and BC (women, n=43,279) screening prevalence for up-to-date and past 2-year. In Medicaid expansion states, they found an increase in the prevalence of CRC and BC screening among low-income adults. They found significantly higher increases than those in non-expansion states only for recent CRC screening in very early expansion states. After expansion in access to care, several years may pass before large-scale improvements in cancer screening can be seen.
