Cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers in patients with neurological symptoms but without neurological diseases
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Sep 06, 2019
Constantinescu R, Mahamud U, Constantinescu C, et al. - Via retrospectively extracted demographic, clinical, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) data from medical records, researchers investigated the role of CSF biomarkers in the clinical management of patients admitted for alarming neurological symptoms but who could be excluded from neurological disorders. Ninety patients without a final neurological diagnosis were involved, out of a cohort with 990 patients, after 900 with a neurological diagnosis were eliminated. The CSF markers neurofilament light chain, total tau protein, and glial fibrillary acidic protein did not show indications of neuronal or astroglial cell harm near symptom onset in patients with significant neurological symptoms but in whom a neurological diagnosis could not be made. As a result, in this patient group, increased levels of CSF markers are not anticipated and, if present, should raise suspicion of underlying neurological disorders and motivate further investigations.
