Central nervous system medication burden and risk of recurrent serious falls and hip fractures in veterans affairs nursing home residents
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Oct 16, 2018
Aspinall SL, et al. - Authors evaluated the correlation between central nervous system (CNS) medication dosage burden and the risk of serious falls, including hip fractures, in individuals (aged ≥ 65 years) residing in the Veterans Health Administration Community Living Centers (CLCs) with a history of a recent fall in this nested case-control study. Findings suggested a greater likeliness of nursing home residents with a history of a fall or hip fracture receiving ≥ 3.0 CNS standardized daily doses (SDDs) to have a recurrent serious fall vs those not taking CNS medications. The authors suggested that serious falls may be reduced by interventions targeting this vulnerable population.
