Causal effect of adiposity measures on blood pressure traits in 2 urban Swedish cohorts: A Mendelian randomization study

Journal of the American Heart Association Jun 18, 2021

Giontella A, Lotta LA, Overton JD, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for assessing the correlation of different measures of genetically mediated adiposity with different blood pressure (BP)‐related traits, including hypertension prevalence and incidence, using a Mendelian randomization design. In this investigation, 4 different genetic risk scores (GRS; GRS‐BMI 565, GRS‐WHR 324, GRS‐VAT 208, GRS‐BF 81) were used including hundreds of single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with BMI, waist‐to‐hip ratio, visceral adipose tissue, and body fat, respectively. A causal link was supported between genetically mediated adiposity, particularly waist‐to‐hip ratio and BMI, and BP traits such as hypertension prevalence and, for the first time, hypertension incidence. The magnitude differences between these associations may indicate different mechanisms by which different adiposity affects BP/hypertension and, as a result, may imply that tailored interventions are required to reduce cardiovascular risk.
