Cataract surgery outcomes in eyes with chorioretinal coloboma
Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery May 02, 2019
Sahay P, et al. - In patients with chorioretinal coloboma, researchers assessed the outcomes of cataract surgery. Between January 2016 and May 2018, medical records of patients with chorioretinal coloboma having cataract surgery were reviewed. For this retrospective case series, 38 patients with a mean age at surgery of 36.7 years were involved. The most commonly performed cataract surgery followed by lens aspiration and extracapsular cataract surgery was phacoemulsification. In 69.2% of cases, uneventful cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation was performed. Compared with age-matched patients with senile cataract, cataracts in patients with chorioretinal coloboma are usually advanced. Delayed surgery results in suboptimum results, therefore, surgery should be scheduled as soon as possible after documenting the cataract.
