Cardiovascular disease risk factors and metabolic morbidity in a longitudinal study of congenital adrenal hyperplasia
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Mar 09, 2021
Torky A, Sinaii N, Jha S, et al. - Researchers analyzed cardiovascular as well as metabolic morbidity risk in a longitudinal analysis of patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) spanning both childhood and adulthood. Participants included classic CAH cases observed for a minimum of 5 years during both childhood and adulthood (n = 57) as well as the US general population. CAH patients vs the US population was found to have a higher prevalence of obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance, fasting hyperglycemia and low HDL during childhood and obesity, hypertension and insulin resistance during adulthood. According to findings, CAH patients experienced metabolic morbidity at a young age related to treatment-associated as well as familial factors. Judicious employment of glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid is warranted.
