Cancer risk in older persons living with human immunodeficiency virus infection in the United States
Clinical Infectious Diseases Jun 21, 2018
Mahale P, et al. - Considering the increased cancer risk in persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PLWH), researchers analyzed data from the HIV/AIDS Cancer Match Study (1996–2012) and evaluated risks of Kaposi sarcoma (KS), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), Hodgkin lymphoma, and cervical, anal, lung, liver, oral cavity/pharyngeal, breast, prostate, and colon cancers in older PLWH. As per outcomes, older PLWH showed elevated cancer risk. Despite a decrease in standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) with age, excess absolute risks (EARs) were noted to be higher for some cancers, reflecting a greater absolute excess in cancer incidence among older PLWH. They observed a high risk for some cancers in the first 5 years after HIV diagnosis emphasizing the necessity for early HIV diagnosis and rapid treatment initiation.
