Song YH, et al. - After parathyroidectomy (PTX) with secondary hyperparathyroidism, hyperkalemia frequently occurs in many maintenance hemodialysis patients, so researchers sought the clinical risk factors that could predict postoperative hyperkalemia. Out of 90 included maintenance hemodialysis patients (aged ≥18 years) who underwent PTX at Aerospace Center Hospital (Peking University Aerospace School of Clinical Medicine), 22 (24.4%) developed postoperative hyperkalemia; 16 of these (18.1%) developed hyperkalemia on postoperative day 3. As per the univariate logistic regression model, the only independent factor that could predict hyperkalemia following parathyroidectomy was preoperative serum potassium. End-stage renal disease patients undergoing PTX with pre-operative serum potassium less than 3.9 mmol/L suffered post-operative hyperkalemia less frequently.
