C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 16 is a potent predictor of outcomes in dialysis patients
American Journal of Nephrology Sep 15, 2021
Liu W, Wang L, Li X, et al. - All-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in dialysis patients were potently predicted by C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 16 (CXCL16; an inflammatory marker) when a multimarker approach was applied, and CXCL16 may improve risk stratification as well as could afford a potential interventional target.
This multicenter longitudinal study involved 366 prevalent dialysis patients who were then examined for circulating inflammatory markers using a multiplex assay.
Post-adjustment, logarithmically transformed CXCL16, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and C-reactive protein were identified as independent predictors for all-cause mortality.
Only CXCL16 showed significance when the 3 markers were included in the same model.
CXCL16 was an independent predictor for major adverse cardiovascular events even post-adjustment for IL-6.
CXCL16 combined with established risk factors improved risk prediction.
