Burnout rate and risk factors among anesthesiologists in the United States
Anesthesiology Apr 17, 2021
Afonso AM, Cadwell JB, Staffa SJ, et al. - To enhance knowledge regarding burnout in anesthesiologists, explore the workplace as well as personal factors related to burnout among anesthesiologists, as well as to quantify their strength of association, this study was undertaken. A survey was conducted during March 2020 among member anesthesiologists of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. The Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey was used to evaluate burnout. In multivariable analysis, the factors that were independently related to high risk for burnout were: perceived lack of support at work; working greater than or equal to 40 h/week; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual status; and perceived staffing shortages. Findings revealed a high prevalence of burnout among anesthesiologists, with workplace factors weighing heavily. Risk factors for burnout were unveiled, especially perceived support in the workplace, where focused interventions may be successful in decreasing burnout.
