Burden of cardiovascular risk factors and disease among patients with type 1 diabetes: Results of the Australian National Diabetes Audit (ANDA)
Cardiovascular Diabetology Jun 09, 2018
Pease A, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from patients with type 1 diabetes aged ≥ 18 years in the 2015 Australian National Diabetes Audit in order to see if traditional and diabetes-specific cardiovascular risk factors were prevalent and strongly related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) among these patients attending Australian diabetes centers. Cardiovascular risk factors were prevalent in this population, including hypertension (21.9%), dyslipidemia (89.4%), overweight/obesity (56.4%), ever smoking (38.5%), albuminuria (31.1%), estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (10.3%), and HbA1c > 7.0% (53 mmol/mol) (81.0%). CVD was positively linked to older age, longer diabetes duration, smoking and antihypertensive therapy use. They also observed an approximate J-shaped association between type 1 diabetes duration and CVD. In the development of future guidelines, diabetes duration should be included in diabetes-specific cardiovascular risk stratification tools.
