Burden of candidemia in the United States, 2017
Clinical Infectious Diseases Mar 07, 2020
Tsay SV, Mu Y, Williams S, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the candidemia burden in the United States. In 45 counties in nine states encompassing ~17 million persons (5% of the national population), active population-based surveillance for candidemia performed in 2017 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through the Emerging Infections Program. All blood cultures with Candida were reported by laboratories serving the catchment area population, and the cases that occurred in surveillance area residents were identified using a standard case definition. Across nine surveillance sites, 1,226 candidemia cases were identified in 2017. This suggests an estimated occurrence of 22,660 cases of candidemia in the United States in 2017. This study thereby highlights the substantial burden of candidemia in the US. The true burden of invasive infections due to Candida is higher as candidemia is only one form of invasive candidiasis. They suggest undertaking continuous surveillance to support future burden estimates and to assist in assessing the impact of prevention interventions.
