Breastfeeding factors and risk of epithelial ovarian cancer
Gynecologic Oncology Mar 24, 2019
Modugno F, et al. - In this population-based, case-control study conducted in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York from 2003 to 2008, researchers assessed the link between breastfeeding factors and epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). They examined parous women to determine breastfeeding factors and performed comparisons between 689 incident EOC cases to 1,572 community controls. They estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) adjusting for potential confounders, using multivariable unconditional logistic regression. Attenuated EOC risk was found in relation to breastfeeding for as little as 3 months. Although they reported a decline in this link over time, it persisted for more than 30 years. The factors that showed an association with increased benefit were longer cumulative duration, increasing number of breastfeeding episodes, and earlier age at first breastfeeding episode.
