Body dysmorphic disorder in patients with acne: A multicentre study
Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Nov 07, 2019
Marron SE, Miranda-Sivelo A, Tomas-Aragones L, et al. - Researchers screened patients for possible presence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). They investigated its prevalence according to DSM-IV and DSM-5 criteria, as well as to analyzed the relationship between dermatological and sociodemographic variables. The study by members of the Aragon Psychodermatology Research Group and Spanish Research Group of Psychiatric Dermatology included a total of 245 patients diagnosed with acne in 11 dermatological centers in Spain. This sample exhibited BDD prevalence of 10.6%. With DSM-IV or DSM-5 criteria, the same prevalence was observed. In patients with acne, this high prevalence of possible cases of BDD indicates the necessity for dermatologists to screen for BDD so that they can be referred to a mental health unit to establish the diagnosis and be administered treatment to decrease the progression of psychosocial deterioration and the development of comorbid disorders.
