Body composition in anorexia nervosa: Meta-analysis and meta-regression of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies
International Journal of Eating Disorders Sep 20, 2019
Hübel C, Yilmaz Z, Schaumberg KE, et al. - Researchers sought to quantify the altered body composition in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). In addition, they investigated how these alterations are related to metabolites and hormones in these patients. They conducted 94 meta-analyses on 62 samples published during 1996–2019, based on PRISMA guidelines, and compared up to 2,319 pretreatment, posttreatment, and weight-recovered female patients with AN with up to 1,879 controls. Pretreatment female patients with AN showed 50% lower fat mass and 4.98 kg lower fat-free mass. During early weight restoration, fat mass preferentially stored in the trunk region in these females. Following weight restoration, the majority of traits returned to levels seen in healthy controls, however, fat-free mass and bone mineral density remained significantly altered.
