Yamagishi K, et al. - Utilizing data from Japanese (n=27,728) men and women (aged 40–79 years) without any history of stroke, coronary heart disease, cancer, or kidney disease at enrollment (1988–1990), researchers assessed the link between blood pressure (BP) and cardiovascular mortality in real-world settings. They also determined if the use of antihypertensive medication at baseline led to differences in that association. Findings revealed a liner and positive relation of BP categories at baseline with cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality overall and also in subjects not taking antihypertensive medication. Patients already treated for hypertension with optimal and normal BPs exhibited a higher risk of mortality from CVD vs those with high-normal BP, indicating the significance of careful monitoring of BP and comorbidities of such patients.
