Blindness and visual impairment profile and rapid assessment of avoidable blindness in South East Asia: Analysis of New Data. 2017 APAO Holmes Lecture
Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology Jul 03, 2019
Das T, et al. - Several rapid assessments of avoidable blindness (RAAB) studies in some of the countries in the region have been conducted in the past decades. Some of this information is a component of the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) Vision Atlas. However, some of the most recent data published in 2017 were not included in the Vision Atlas and this communication is primarily based on these reports. In this decade (2010 onwards), RAAB, either a repeat or a first-time survey, has been completed in 8 countries. These incorporate Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Timor Leste. In all countries, cataract is the principal cause of blindness and severe visual impairment. Findings suggested that rigorous focus is needed to enhance the results of cataract surgery and to correct the refractive error without neglecting the quality of care. At the same moment, allowances must be created for the care of the emerging causes of visual impairment and blindness like glaucoma and posterior segment disorders, especially diabetic retinopathy.
