Biologic mesh implantation is associated with serious abdominal wall complications in patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery: A randomized-controlled clinical trial
The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Nov 26, 2020
Jakob MO, Haltmeier T, Candinas D, et al. - Via this prospective randomized study, researchers sought to compare the outcome after prophylactic intraperitoneal implantation of a biologic Strattice mesh (Allergan, Dublin, Ireland) vs standard abdominal closure in patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery. They conducted a two-arm randomized clinical trial randomizing a total of 48 patients (21 in the mesh group, 28 in the no-mesh group). Findings suggest correlation of intraperitoneal biologic Strattice mesh implantation with significantly more frequent abdominal wall complications requiring reoperation in patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery. Hence, they do not recommend the use of such meshes in the contaminated environment of emergency abdominal surgery.
