Binge drinking moderates the association between chronic lung disease and E-cigarette use
Respiratory Care Jun 01, 2021
Alqahtani MM, Alanazi AM, Pavela G, et al. - The present study was performed to explore the association between chronic lung disease and e-cigarette use and to ascertain if binge drinking moderates this relationship. Researchers derived data from the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. They used logistic regression to investigate the relationship between chronic lung disease status and e-cigarette use, controlling for demographic variables and chronic health conditions. Moderation analyses were performed to evaluate the hypothesis that the association between chronic lung disease and lifetime e-cigarette use would be modified by binge drinking. Among adults with chronic lung disease, e-cigarette use seems to be more common. More frequent binge drinking weakened the relationship between chronic lung disease and e-cigarette use, although binge drinking was positively associated with e-cigarette use. Though there is a need for further trials to ascertain precisely how binge drinking affects this relationship, it is possible that individuals with chronic lung disease who binge drink more frequently use e-cigarettes less frequently, despite an elevated likelihood of having ever used an e-cigarette.
