Benzodiazepine use during pregnancy alone or in combination with an antidepressant and congenital malformations: Systematic review and meta-analysis
The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry Jul 15, 2019
Grigoriadis S, et al. - Researchers assessed the risk of congenital malformations in correlation to antenatal benzodiazepine exposure as monotherapy and in combination with antidepressants. In searching MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Embase, and the Cochrane Library, they screened 23,909 records, assessed 56 studies for eligibility; they included 8 studies. Outcomes suggest no correlation of benzodiazepine exposure during pregnancy with congenital malformations including cardiac malformations. Risk of congenital malformations may increase when using benzodiazepines in combination with antidepressants. This suggests practicing caution with this combination.
