Benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation in COPD patients with mild cognitive impairment – A pilot study
Respiratory Medicine May 28, 2021
Andrianopoulos V, Gloeckl R, Schneeberger T, et al. - Researchers investigated cognitively impaired (CI) and cognitively normal (CN) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients for their differential responses to pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) by assessing their health status and exercise capacity. They classified 60 patients (FEV1: 47 ± 15%) as CI or CN according to the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA ≤ 25 points) and made them complete a 3-week inpatient PR program. Findings support the effectiveness of PR in treating COPD for both CI and CN patients. In both CI and CN COPDs, favorable effects of the 3-week PR program were evident on health status as well as exercise capacity. Special consideration may be required for persisting bodily pain of COPDs with CI in PR.
