Behavioral couples therapy vs cognitive behavioral therapy for problem gambling: A randomized controlled trial
Addiction Nov 28, 2019
Nilsson A, et al. - Researchers examined the relative efficacy of behavioral couples therapy (BCT) vs cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for both the gambler and the concerned significant others (CSOs). They conducted two parallel-group randomized controlled comparing two different Internet-based treatments for problem gambling. Participants were 136 problem gamblers and 136 CSOs: 68 gamblers and 68 CSOs for each treatment condition. A comparison of a treatment based on BCT with a CBT intervention was done. Both treatments were Internet-based with 10 therapist-guided self-help modules. These were followed by weekly telephone and e-mail support from a therapist. In the BCT condition, but not in the CBT condition, treatment was provided to CSOs. Internet-based behavioral couples therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of problem gambling were not significantly different in the efficacy. However, there were more gamblers who commenced treatment in the behavioral couples therapy group.
