Baseline visual acuity at wet AMD diagnosis predicts long-term vision outcomes: An analysis of the IRIS Registry
Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Dec 02, 2020
Ho AC, Kleinman DM, Lum FC, et al. - Since clinical trials in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) show that high visual acuity (VA) can be maintained, and low VA can be improved with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment, researchers conducted this non-interventional, retrospective cohort study to compare VA at diagnosis and after treatment utilizing data from a large patient registry. The sample consisted of patients diagnosed with nAMD between January 1, 2013, and June 30, 2017, who were entered in the IRIS Registry. The research involved 162,902 eyes. Long-term VA results are predicted by baseline VA at nAMD diagnosis. A key factor in maintaining vision in patients with nAMD is early diagnosis prior to VA being adversely affected.
