Barriers to completing oral glucose tolerance testing in women at risk of gestational diabetes
Diabetic Medicine Mar 24, 2020
Lachmann EH, et al. - Given the significance of making diagnosis for mitigating the complications of gestational diabetes (GDM), researchers here investigated the reasons that contribute to non‐completion of antenatal diagnostic oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT) among some at‐risk women; they especially sought the modifiable factors. Among nearly 1,906 women invited for OGTT based on risk‐factor assessment, nearly 242 women (12.3%) did not complete at least one OGTT; of these, 32.2% (n = 78) never completed testing. The analysis revealed less likelihood to complete testing among younger women and those from minority ethnic groups. Women cited the following as key barriers to completion: the demands of the testing protocol, ability to attend appointments, and mental health or social issues. Hence, they suggest improving screening rates via modification of testing protocols, increased support for vulnerable groups, and fuller explanation regarding test indications and risk.
