B-type natriuretic peptide levels and cardiac dysfunction in children on peritoneal dialysis
Peritoneal Dialysis International May 30, 2019
Park YS, et al. - Among children on peritoneal dialysis (PD), researchers examined the link between serum BNP (B-type natriuretic peptide) and cardiac parameters on echocardiography by performing linear regression analysis of log(BNP), given PD patients have shown a prevalence of abnormalities in left ventricular (LV) structure and function as well as 10 – 20 times higher risk of cardiovascular mortality compared to age- and gender-matched healthy control individuals. Positive correlation with log(BNP) was shown by systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, LV posterior wall thickness at diastole, LV posterior wall thickness at systole, LV internal diameter at diastole, LV internal diameter at systole, LV mass index, thickness of interventricular septum at diastole, the left atrial (LA) diameter, LA/aorta diameter ratio, lateral E/E′, and lateral A′/E′. Based on the findings, they concluded that serum BNP should be routinely measured in children on PD to assess the risk of morphological and functional cardiac problems.
