Azithromycin or doxycycline for asymptomatic rectal chlamydia trachomatis

New England Journal of Medicine Jun 29, 2021

Lau A, Kong FYS, Fairley CK, et al. - Among homosexual men, rectal chlamydia is identified as a common bacterial sexually transmissible infection. Researchers conducted a double-blind trial at five sexual health clinics in Australia, randomizing 625 homosexual men who had asymptomatic rectal chlamydia to receive either doxycycline (100 mg twice daily for 7 days) or azithromycin (1-g single dose). Outcomes suggest superiority of a 7-day course of doxycycline vs single-dose azithromycin in the treatment of rectal chlamydia infection among these study participants.
