Automated grading of age-related macular degeneration from color fundus images using deep convolutional neural networks
JAMA Ophthalmology Oct 04, 2017
Burlina PM, et al. - This trial intended to formulate techniques for the automatical recognition of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) from fundus images, with the aid of a novel application of deep learning methods to the automated analysis of such images and to leverage artificial intelligence advances. It was deduced that the application of a deep learningÂbased automated assessment of AMD from fundus images could illustrate similar results to the human performance levels. The automated algorithms could play a role which was independent of expert human graders in the current management of AMD. The costs of screening or monitoring, access to health care, and the assessment of novel therapies targeting the development or progression of AMD could be addressed.
