Atraumatic vs conventional lumbar puncture needles: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The Lancet | Dec 11, 2017
Nath S, et al. - Researchers performed a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing patient outcomes after lumbar puncture with atraumatic needles and conventional needles. They observed that atraumatic needles were associated with a decrease in the incidence of postdural-puncture headache among patients who had lumbar puncture. In addition, a decreased necessity for patients to return to hospital for additional therapy, and similar efficacy to conventional needles were evident with atraumatic needles. Evidence gained suggested that atraumatic needles were superior regarding the safety and efficacy for patients who require lumbar puncture.
