Atopic dermatitis in the elderly: A review of clinical and pathophysiological hallmarks
British Journal of Dermatology Jan 14, 2020
Williamson S, et al. - Researchers intended to conclude recent information on pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of atopic dermatitis (AD) in the elderly population and distinguish areas of insufficient information to be explored in further evaluations. A systematic review of published literature was conducted to investigate alterations in the skin barrier and immune function with ageing and recent information available for physicians to use in the diagnosis and treatment of AD in elderly patients. A study gap exists regarding specific ageing-related alterations in AD disease establishment, while general physiological alterations with ageing overlap with key features of AD. There is need of more knowledge about AD in the elderly to develop firm diagnostic and treatment methodologies.
