Atherosclerotic vascular disease is more prevalent among black ESKD patients on long-term CAPD in South Africa
BMC Nephrology Nov 13, 2019
Oguntola SO, et al. - In this cross-sectional analysis, researchers analyzed black South Africans with chronic kidney disease (CKD) (stage 3) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and haemodialysis (HD), to examine the link between atherosclerotic vascular disease (AsVD) and clinical and echocardiographic parameters among these individuals. Participants included adult (18–65 years) non-diabetic CKD patients (n = 40), ESKD patients on CAPD (n = 40), ESKD patients on HD (n = 40), and 41 age and gender-matched healthy controls. Findings revealed more prevalence of AsVD in CAPD patients vs pre-dialysis CKD and HD patients. The most consistent significant difference between the groups was demonstrated by non-HDL-C among all lipoprotein ratios evaluated. They also noted that AsVD was independently predicted by age (> 40 years) and the presence of left ventricular hypertrophy.
