Associations of preoperative breast magnetic resonance imaging with subsequent mastectomy and breast cancer mortality
Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Oct 20, 2018
Wang SY, et al. - In women undergoing breast-conserving surgery (BCS) for early-stage breast cancer with or without radiotherapy, researchers studied the links between pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) use and clinical outcomes. They used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare dataset and identified women aged 67-94 diagnosed during 2004-2010 with stage I/II breast cancer who received BCS. They used Cox regression and competing risks models to compare subsequent mastectomy and breast cancer mortality with vs without pre-operative MRI. According to findings, improved outcomes were seen in relation to pre-operative MRI among older women with breast cancer receiving BCS alone, but not among those receiving BCS plus radiotherapy.
