Associations of perioperative variables with the 30-day risk of stroke or death in carotid endarterectomy for symptomatic carotid stenosis
Stroke Nov 27, 2019
Knappich C, Kuehnl A, Haller B, et al. - Individual patient-level data from the five largest randomized controlled carotid trials of 4,181 individuals who received carotid endarterectomy for symptomatic stenosis per protocol were recruited in the Carotid Stenosis Trialists’ Collaboration database in order to evaluate the relationship between perioperative and clinical variables and the 30-day risk of stroke or death following carotid endarterectomy for symptomatic carotid stenosis. Results designated that in individuals operated upon under local anesthesia, lower perioperative stroke or death rates were noted, whilst possible risk factors were a more severe neurological deficiency and a contralateral high-grade carotid stenosis or occlusion. Irrespective of potential selection bias and individuals not having been randomized, these findings could be beneficial to direct surgeons and anesthetists while treating people with symptomatic carotid disease.
