Associations of internet addiction severity with psychopathology, serious mental illness, and suicidality: Large-sample cross-sectional study
Journal of Medical Internet Research Aug 14, 2020
Guo W, Tao Y, Li X, et al. - Via a survey among first-year undergraduates enrolled at Sichuan University in September 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018, researchers examined if and how internet addiction severity is associated with adverse mental health outcomes. Mild, moderate, and severe internet addiction was reported in 37.93% (12,009/31,659), 6.33% (2003/31,659), and 0.20% (63/31,659) of the students, respectively. While the strongest association was seen with clinically significant depression, there remained a strong correlation of moderate and severe internet addiction with a wide range of adverse mental health outcomes, including somatic symptoms that are the key features of many medical illnesses. This observation establishes the illness validity of moderate and severe internet addiction vs mild internet addiction. In the current era of “Internet Plus” and artificial intelligence, these results may have implications for resolving the overall human health burden.
