Associations of dietary protein intake with fat free mass and grip strength: Cross-sectional study in 146,816 UK Biobank participants
American Journal of Epidemiology Jul 04, 2018
Celis-Morales CA, et al. - Researchers examined the associations of protein intake with fat-free mass (FFM) and grip strength by analyzing baseline data from the UK Biobank (146,816 participants aged 40-69 years with data collected 2007-2010 across the UK). They observed a positive association of protein intake with FFM and grip strength per 0.5 grams per kg body mass per day (g/kg/day) increment in protein intake. They noted that across the full range of intakes, higher FFM and grip strength were observed in association with higher intakes. Lower FFM and grip strength were detected with age, but no difference was seen with regards to this association across protein intake categories. Overall, optimization of FFM and grip strength may require increasing current recommendation for all adults (40-69 years) for protein intake (0.8 grams per kg body mass per day).
