American Journal of Kidney Diseases Jun 08, 2019
van Zwieten A, et al. - Given that the association of cognitive impairment with increased mortality, and of higher levels of education with lower risks for cognitive impairment and mortality have been reported in the general population, researchers assessed these links among patients receiving long-term hemodialysis. In this prospective cohort study, they included adult hemodialysis patients from 20 Italian dialysis clinics and used a neuropsychological evaluation including 10 tests. They found a link between cognitive impairment and premature mortality in hemodialysis patients. There appeared no association between education and mortality.
