Associations between insufficient sleep and prescription opioid misuse among high school students in the United States
Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine May 28, 2021
Groenewald CB, Rabbitts JA, Tham SW, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is an association between insufficient sleep and prescription opioid misuse among US high school students. The sample consisted of 6,884 high school students who self-reported on sleep duration and prescription opioid misuse in the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). According to the results, the majority of participants (79.4%) reported sleeping less than 8 hours per night. Findings suggested an association of sleep duration with lifetime opioid misuse among US youth. Longitudinal studies are required to determine whether causal relationships exist and to comprehend the biobehavioral mechanisms underlying the links between sleep deficiency and opioid misuse in adolescents.
