Associations between gabapentinoids and suicidal behaviour, unintentional overdoses, injuries, road traffic incidents, and violent crime: Population based cohort study in Sweden
BMJ Jun 19, 2019
Molero Y, et al. - In this population-based cohort study, researchers investigated connections between gabapentinoids and adverse outcomes related to coordination disturbances (head or body injuries, or both and road traffic incidents or offences), mental health (suicidal behavior, unintentional overdoses), and criminality. Participants in the study were 191,973 people from the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register who received prescriptions for gabapentinoids (pregabalin or gabapentin). Findings suggested an association between an increased risk of suicidal behavior, unintentional overdoses, head/body injuries, and road traffic incidents and offenses with gabapentinoids. Higher hazards of these outcomes were seen with pregabalin vs gabapentin, and these connections were strongest in those aged 15 to 24, where hazards were increased for all outcomes. It may be necessary to review guidelines for gabapentinoid treatment in young people.
