Association of video game use with body mass index and other energy-balance behaviors in children

JAMA Apr 09, 2020

Goodman W, , et al. - In this secondary analysis of cohort data involving 16,376 children in the UK, researchers ascertained if there is a longer-term correlation between young age video game use and later years BMI SD score, independent of television use, and whether other energy-balance behaviors mediate this correlation. According to findings, video game use at age 5 years was linked to higher BMI SD score at age 14 years. The data presented in this work showed a small (and not clinically meaningful) correlation between early childhood video game use and later higher BMI, which could be mediated by irregular bedtimes and increased sugar-sweetened beverage consumption.
