Davis MA, Cher BAY, Friese CR, et al. - Researchers investigated the risk of suicide among US nurses and physicians relative to the general population. In addition, they examined characteristics of nurse suicides compared with physicians and the general population. Using data from 2007 to 2018, a cohort study was performed including 2,374 nurses, 857 physicians, and 156,141 individuals in the general population (age, ≥ 30 years). Among women, the suicide incidence rates per 100,000 in 2017-2018 were 17.1 for nurses, 10.1 for physicians, and 8.6 for the general population, and among men, the suicide incidence rates were 31.1 for nurses, 31.5 for physicians, and 32.6 for the general population. Overall, significantly increased suicide risk was recorded for nurses but not for physicians when compared with the general population.
